“Fake news” has become a politically divisive term that is often used as a blanket statement to dismiss arguments that one does not agree with. In order to help students fight the good fight against “fake news” it’s probably time to ban the term forever. Instead, we can empower students by teaching them the various forms of misinformation while helping them understand why it is created and how it is developed to ‘go viral’. Additionally, we can add to students’ toolkits of techniques for identifying and verifying the credibility of information they encounter online.
